"kata kata x Komiya Shoten" collaboration: 2-way folding umbrella with a bag that can be used as an eco-bag

This umbrella is a collaboration between Komiya Shoten and "kata kata," a husband-and-wife unit consisting of Takeshi Matsunaga and Chie Takai, who create dyed fabrics using stencil dyeing and Chusen dyeing. The texture of the Hogushi-ori fabric, which is a combination of polyester and cotton, creates a soft and gentle feel. The bag can also be used as an eco-bag, so it can be rolled up for storage, and the umbrella ribs can be extended for a 2-way design, making it a highly functional folding umbrella.

"kata kata x Komiya Shoten" collaboration folding umbrella

Komiya Shoten has collaborated with "kata kata," a husband-and-wife unit made up of Takeshi Matsunaga and Chie Takai, who create original dyed fabrics using techniques such as stencil dyeing and chusen dyeing, to create an umbrella that can be used in both rain and shine. The duo create warm and playful designs, and this time we chose a leaf design from their work, which they specially redesigned to match Komiya Shoten's umbrellas. Komiya Shoten then added color to the design, bringing the "kata kata x Komiya Shoten" collaboration to fruition.

Sun and rain umbrella A waterproof parasol for both rain and shine

The fabric is treated to cut UV rays (protect against ultraviolet rays) as well as to be water-repellent and water-resistant. This is a rain and sun umbrella that can be used primarily as a parasol but can also be used as an umbrella in the rain. (If used for a long time in heavy rain, rainwater may seep through the umbrella fabric.)

    About the fabric

"Koshu-ori" is attractive for its lustrous sheen and solid feel

The fabric used is "Koshu-ori," which is intricately woven in Yamanashi Prefecture, a famous textile production region with a history of over 400 years.
Koshu ori is a "pre-dyed" fabric made by weaving extremely fine yarns that have been dyed beforehand into a high density, uniform weave.

This has resulted in a glossy, deep color and an elegant, heavy texture, and the product still boasts high quality today.
The weaving technique that uses double yarn (twisted yarn) for the warp and single yarn (one thread) for the weft is characteristic of Yamanashi textiles, resulting in a fabric that combines luxury and durability.

The production of Koshu-ori fabric begins at a dyer's shop, where the threads are dyed, then goes through a warper, where the threads are arranged into warp threads, before being sewn into fabric at a weaver's shop.
The fabric is carefully woven over a long period of time, and is then treated to be water-repellent, water-resistant, and UV-resistant, before it can finally be used as an umbrella.
In this way, the fabric that has been made by many people is then cut and sewn by craftsmen to make into umbrellas.

    The traditional Koshu-ori technique "Hogushiori-ori"

The temporarily woven warp threads are dyed one by one with a printing stencil, and the colors are carefully layered and dyed.
The weaving technique in which a weft thread is set on a narrow shuttle loom and used to weave the fabric is called "hogushi-ori."
When the actual weaving begins, the temporary weft threads are removed and the threads are loosened by hand while weaving.
A distinctive feature of this technique is that the dyed patterns are subtly shifted, making them look like watercolor paintings.
Enjoy the warm and soft look that is different from prints.

In addition, narrow shuttle looms are extremely rare, and the weft thread is woven by beating it in with a shuttle and then folded back, which results in selvedge on the edges of the fabric.
Since there is no need to sew a large piece of fabric to fit the width of the umbrella, there are no perforations, so it looks smart and stylish, and another attractive feature is that you don't have to worry about it fraying even if you use it for a long time.

Crafting an Umbrella Through Careful Adjustments

As this was our first time working with a polyester and cotton blend, we worked extra carefully and meticulously, checking the degree of stretch.
Using a wooden mold that was completed after many adjustments, we made adjustments down to the millimeter and then went through processes of stitching before finally completing the umbrella.

    About the handle

Lightweight and easy to hold, with bamboo ring handle

We use bamboo, which is also familiar in Japan.
It has many joints, which makes it less slippery when held, and it is hollow inside, which makes it very light.
The bamboo used here has been burnt and has a ring-shaped handle, giving it a stylish shape.
The ring is large enough that your arm fits inside, making it easy to carry around.

    • An eco-bag-style umbrella bag that can be folded and stored

The bag for the folding umbrella is in the shape of an eco-bag, and can be used to store a closed umbrella like a long umbrella, or as an eco-bag when shopping.
After use, you can roll up the bag from one end and fasten it with a button for compact storage.

    • You can carry your umbrella without having to fold it.

This folding umbrella is designed so that the tip of the umbrella fits into a groove in the handle, so you can carry it with the ribs extended.
This eliminates the hassle of having to fold up a wet umbrella, and you can store it away after it dries when you get home.

    • Ribs and center pole

The ribs are made of lightweight and durable fiberglass material. It has a moderate thickness and flexibility, so it is lightweight but strong against wind. It is also a rust-free material, so it is easy to maintain on a daily basis.
The center rod is made of aluminum.
It is a very lightweight material that does not rust and is therefore easy to maintain.
