Kawazubari Embroidery Check : Series Concept

A natural material umbrella with a Kawazubari cover and embroidered with small flowers and nuts and a fine gingham check pattern.

It is made with waterproof natural fabric on both sides and is covered in a double layer of fabric using the "kawazuburi" method, which hides the bones. The combination of small floral embroidered fabric on the front and fine gingham checked fabric on the back creates an elegant and cute umbrella that can be used in both rain and shine, showcasing the artisan's skill. You can choose between floral embroidery and nut designs for the outer fabric design.

Sun and rain umbrella A waterproof parasol for both rain and shine

The fabric is treated to cut UV rays (protect against ultraviolet rays) as well as to be water-repellent and water-resistant. This is a rain and sun umbrella that can be used primarily as a parasol but can also be used as an umbrella in the rain. (If used for a long time in heavy rain, rainwater may seep through the umbrella fabric.)

    About the fabric

A special double-layered "frog skin" that hides the bones

"Frog-bari" is a manufacturing technique in which, in addition to the usual outer fabric, a double layer of fabric is laid on the inside to cover and hide the ribs of the umbrella. The overlapping parts of the two layers of fabric resemble the webbed feet of a frog, hence the name "frog-bari."

The design, with the ribs covered in fabric, adds an extra touch of glamour, and you can also enjoy the combination of the lining, which is subtly visible through the outer fabric.

Your hair won't get tangled in the ribs when you hold the umbrella, so you don't have to worry about your hair getting messed up.
Another feature is that the double layer of fabric creates space between the layers, which makes it difficult for sunlight to penetrate and allows hot air that builds up in the space to escape, making it feel cool when used as a parasol.

A precious manufacturing process that requires the hands of artisans

Making an umbrella using Kawaraban takes more than twice as long as usual because it requires cutting not only the outer fabric but also the lining, sewing them together to create an umbrella cover, and then sewing it to the ribs of the umbrella.
Furthermore, the lining, which is made up of two overlapping pieces, is cut and re-sewn with a sewing machine and adjusted as it is made so that a deep curve appears when it is placed on top of the outer fabric, making this a difficult umbrella to make, requiring exquisite control of force and craftsmanship.
This is a rare manufacturing method that only a limited number of craftsmen are able to produce today.

Umbrella for both sun and rain with embroidery on natural materials and fine gingham checks

The combination of small floral embroidered fabric on the front and fine gingham checked fabric on the back creates an umbrella that can be used in both rain and shine, expressing elegance and cuteness.

    About the handle

A cute ring-shaped round maple handle

The natural handle is made from maple, which is durable and smooth to the touch, and shaped into a cute ring shape that makes it easy to hold.

    • Umbrella for both sun and rain with double layered fabric for improved UV protection and light blocking effects

By layering two layers of fabric without applying a black coating, we were able to improve the UV protection and light blocking effect. It looks more natural, and both the front and back look cool and stylish.

    • Rokuro winding and dowel winding

The part that moves up and down when opening and closing the umbrella is called the "rokuro" and the joint part of the bone is called the "dabo."
The process of protecting each of these parts with the umbrella fabric is called "rokuromaki" and "dabomaki," and each part is carefully attached and covered to protect your hands when opening the umbrella and to prevent damage to the ribs, while also creating a traditional beauty and sense of luxury.
This is an old-fashioned technique that is time-consuming and therefore not seen much these days, but all of Komiya Shoten's long umbrellas are equipped with it.

    • Ribs and center pole

The ribs are made of steel (iron that has been heat-treated). Steel is heavy compared to other materials, but it is a very strong material. Therefore, it is resistant to wind and has the strength to support the umbrella, so it goes well with fabric and can fully express the beauty of the umbrella's tension.
It uses a natural center pole made of maple wood, which is highly durable.
