Hello.
This is Tagawa from Komiya Shoten.
This time, we will introduce you to a frog-patterned parasol that will help you look stylish in the summer.
"Frog-bari" is a manufacturing technique in which, in addition to the usual outer fabric, a double layer of fabric is laid on the inside to cover and hide the ribs of the umbrella. The overlapping parts of the two layers of fabric resemble the webbed feet of a frog, hence the name "frog-bari."
The design, with the ribs covered in fabric, adds an extra touch of glamour, and you can also enjoy the combination with the pattern of the lining, which subtly shows through to the outer fabric.
Your hair won't get tangled in the ribs when you hold the umbrella, so you don't have to worry about your hair getting messed up.
Another feature is that the double layer of fabric creates space between the layers, which makes it difficult for sunlight to penetrate and allows hot air that builds up in the space to escape, making it feel cool when used as a parasol.
This "frog-patterned umbrella" looks stylish and elegant just by holding it, but it is a special Western-style umbrella, so even experienced craftsmen take a lot of time and effort to make.
It is a difficult task just to make the umbrella cover from not only the outer fabric but also the lining fabric and sew it to the umbrella ribs. Furthermore, the edges of the lining umbrella cover must be cut and re-sewn with a sewing machine to create a deep curve. This means that it takes more time than making two normal umbrellas and is a difficult umbrella that requires exquisite strength and craftsmanship.
The frog-covered umbrella from Komiya Shoten that is completed through this process is the product shown below.
This product is no longer available.
This umbrella can be used not only as a parasol but also in light rain or shine.
This is a masterpiece that embodies the soul of the craftsman, so please come and see it.
Komiya Shoten's Higashi-Nihonbashi shop also sells the "Rokumei Ombreru," a frog-covered umbrella that is a reproduction of a parasol from the Meiji period.
