"One-of-a-kind umbrellas" completed at the workshop
I'm Tanaka, a craftsman.
This time, I would like to talk about the umbrella-making workshop held at Komiya Shoten on Thursday, December 2nd.
This was our first time holding a workshop, but thankfully all four seats were sold out and we were able to hold the event with everyone in attendance on the day.
Participants were asked to choose their favorite color from the "Kasane Series" folding umbrellas in advance, and then challenged themselves to attach a cover to the frame called the "saddle stitching," and to make the part that is attached to the tip of the umbrella called the "chrysanthemum seat."
At first, they had a hard time moving the needle as they wanted, and there were complaints here and there of "this is difficult...", but as they moved forward one step at a time, their hand movements became faster and they were able to insert the needle in the correct location.
Although none of the participants had experience in needlework or making things, they were able to create well-made tailoring that even the staff were impressed.
As people got used to using their hands, the conversation naturally flowed, and a truly friendly and harmonious atmosphere was created.
Seeing the participants concentrate on their work and take great delight in the finished product made us realize that perhaps we too had similar experiences when we first began working in this field, and it brought us back to our roots as we were busy with our daily work.
Finally, they attached a handle with a personalized plate to the umbrella body, and everyone successfully completed their very own, one-of-a-kind umbrella.
When it was handed over, it was specially wrapped in Christmas wrapping and received as a special present for themselves.
Seeing everyone look so happy, all the staff were glad that we held the event.
The participants taught us that the workshop can be a place where people can connect with each other through craftsmanship and where a small but warm community can thrive.
I feel that creating such spaces is a very important initiative for those involved in manufacturing.
We plan to continue sharing the new appeal and fun of umbrella making in various ways.
This workshop was well received and a second one is currently being planned.
We plan to update this information soon, so if you are interested, please check it out.
