How to fold Komiya Shoten's Japanese umbrellas (in two)

Hello, this is staff member Kato.

Today, following on from last time 's How to Fold Komiya Shoten's Japanese-Made Western-Style Umbrellas (Long Umbrella Edition) , we will introduce you to How to Fold Komiya Shoten's Japanese-Made Western-Style Umbrellas (Two-Fold Edition).

The majority of Komiya Shoten's folding umbrellas are bi-fold (two-stage fold) umbrellas.
Bi-fold umbrellas have a simple design with only one joint in the ribs, which makes them strong, and when folded, the wet side of the fabric faces inwards, so your hands won't get wet.
It also locks when extended like a long umbrella, making it convenient to carry around in stores or on the train.

Although the bi-fold umbrella is very convenient, many customers find it difficult to fold.
However, once you get used to it, it's surprisingly easy!
I hope that you will once again come to appreciate the benefits of a bi-fold wallet.

And there is no correct way to fold it, so
I hope that you will use this as a reference for "a neat way of folding that puts less strain on the bones."
There are four major points.

1. Keep the middle pole extended (lower it last)
2. Break the "joints" of the bones. 3. Trim the "corners" of the dough. 4. Place all the bones into the grooves on the handle.

So let's get started!

First, while keeping the center pole of the umbrella extended, hold the wheel part so that the umbrella fabric is open.

If you zoom in on the area around your hands it looks like this.

Break the joints of the ribs directly by snapping them off.
(Breaking at the joints reduces the strain on the ribs.)

Once all the bones are broken it will look something like this.
Then, with the center rod still extended, hold the wheel to hold the umbrella in place and push the folds of the "corners" of the fabric outward to give it a shape.

If you are having difficulty getting the corners out, try opening the umbrella all the way down and then lifting it up again to make it easier to straighten.

Once you have finished arranging all the corners, do not lower the center pole yet. Instead, use one hand to tightly roll up the umbrella as if you were squeezing it, and fasten the belt first.

*It will look neater if the top creases line up at this point (advanced version).

Finally, lower the center pole.
Insert the bone into the groove on the inside of the handle and when you hear a click, it's done.

By placing and holding all the bones in the grooves on the inside of the handle, the ribs stay straight even when the pen is closed.
When we see umbrellas that have been brought in for repairs due to broken bones, we often notice that some of the ribs are protruding outside the handle. When this happens, the ribs are fixed in a bent position, making them more likely to break if subjected to external impact.

What did you think?
There are various theories on how to fold it, but this time we introduced the general way to fold it in half.
Once you've learned how to fold a folding umbrella neatly, it's so much fun that you'll find yourself wanting to fold up all the umbrellas of other people.

I know that my explanation is poor and difficult to understand, but I encourage everyone to give it a try.

The umbrella I folded this time was the gray and rose pink "Kasane" umbrella.
Please take a look if you are interested.
