How to fold Komiya Shoten's Japanese-made umbrellas (long umbrellas)

Hello, this is staff member Kato.

A frequently asked question at our store is "How to fold Komiya Shoten's Japanese-made umbrellas."
Many people find it troublesome to fold up a wet umbrella when it rains, worrying about getting their hands dirty.
Over the next few posts, we will introduce some convenient ways to fold the bag quickly in such situations.
Please stay with us.
First up, we will introduce "Komiya Shoten's Japanese Made Long Umbrella Edition."

High-quality umbrellas made in Japan, Komiya Shoten brand

The long umbrellas produced by Komiya Shoten are mainly divided into three types: 8 ribs, 12 ribs, and 16 ribs.
Umbrellas with many ribs, such as 12 or 16 ribs, usually have a band to hold the tip of the umbrella together called a "mouth name band" (hereafter referred to as "mouth name"), and Komiya Shoten also has umbrellas with 8 ribs.

Now, I would like to explain how to fold a long umbrella, including why it has that nickname and how to use it.

When folding an umbrella with many ribs, fasten the upper belt (called the "name strap") first.
The basic way to fold a long umbrella is to fold it from the "mouth name" ⇒ "body name band" (hereafter referred to as "body name").
On rainy days, you can hold the umbrella by the name tag in one hand (your dominant hand) and use the other hand to twist and secure the umbrella body, allowing you to hold the umbrella without getting your hands wet.

The fluffy silhouette of the umbrella with only the top fastened is beautiful, so we recommend carrying it as is without fastening the name band on the body right away, and then fastening the name band on the body once the surface of the umbrella has dried a little.

Additionally, men's umbrellas sometimes have a silver sliding part called a "ball stopper" attached to the handle to hold the tip of the umbrella in place.

The silver part shown above is called a "tamadome."
It is mainly attached to the handle of men's size umbrellas over 65cm.
If you tuck the tip of the umbrella together like in the photo, it will be convenient to carry the umbrella without it spreading out.

Men's umbrellas that have many ribs, such as 16 ribs, may have a ball clasp at the handle in addition to the name band.
Normally, if there is a ball fastener, the mouth name tag would not be necessary, but with 16 bones, it takes quite a bit of effort to gather the tip of the hat with your hands and slide the ball fastener, and your hands will get wet in the process, so we made sure to make it possible to hold the tip of the hat in place with a double fastener.

Finally, in the case of parasols, there is no need to suddenly fasten the waist strap like with a rain umbrella and get your hands wet, so even men's sized umbrellas do not have ball fasteners, and are designed to allow you to enjoy the texture of the wood in your hand as much as possible.
However, even in the case of parasols or umbrellas that can be used in both rain and shine, Komiya Shoten's umbrellas come with a "name tag", so you can temporarily tie up just the tip of the umbrella.
It can be used in a variety of situations, such as removing dust from surfaces or using an all-weather umbrella in light rain, so please try it out with your umbrella.

Above is how to fold a long umbrella. I hope this was helpful.
