Awls: a tool that helps with manufacturing

Hello, this is Tanaka, in charge of the Komiya Shoten workshop.
Following on from last time, we will introduce the tools needed to make umbrellas, focusing on "things that create things."

This is a tool called an awl, which is used to make holes and marks.
You can easily get it at home improvement stores.

Unlike the paper cutting tool we looked at last time, this is a popular tool that anyone with experience in craftsmanship should have had in their hands. It is used for drilling holes for the screws that attach the umbrella hat, and is an essential tool for making umbrellas.

All of the awls in the image belong to one craftsman.
Although the length, thickness, and sharpness of each blade vary slightly, it would be difficult to collect all of them if you need to have a large number of them to do your job.

Apparently they are roughly made to begin with, and it is rare to come across one that feels comfortable in your hand right from the start.
As the blunt tip is sharpened each time, the length and center of gravity will change over time.

He said that through subtle changes, the tool will adapt to the shape of your hand, the way you hold it, and how you use it.
It's no wonder the numbers are increasing, as each and every awl seems like the culmination of the time and emotion that went into making the item.

Even if you give up on a product because you think it's impossible to use, you may find that it's easy to use when you pick it up again after a long time.
"In these cases, it's the other way around. The tool feels like it's finally getting used to it."
The look on the craftsman's face as he smiled happily was very impressive.
